How do ads in ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT ads appear as sponsored placements below responses, separate from the answer itself. OpenAI says advertisers cannot influence the model’s answers or see users’ original conversations.

Ads may appear on the Free and Go plans in eligible regions. OpenAI excludes Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts and accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Availability also depends on the experience and region. OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT ads

The system considers the conversation’s context alongside the advertisement and landing page. Advertiser context hints can inform matching, but are not exact-match keywords or a guarantee of placement. OpenAI’s advertiser guide

What do ChatGPT ads cost?

Actual advertising spend depends on auction delivery, campaign settings and the billing method. There is no single price for reaching a customer or acquiring a sale.

OpenAI’s published minimum daily budgets on 6 October 2026 were £15 for sterling accounts and $25 for US dollar accounts. These are budget minimums, not expected costs per result. A daily budget is an average delivery target: the provider’s documentation allows daily variation and describes a campaign-total budget as the stricter total-spend control. Views are billed per thousand impressions and Clicks per valid click. Conversion campaigns can use click or impression billing; payment is not per conversion. OpenAI’s billing explanation

When might ChatGPT advertising suit a brand?

It may suit a brand whose eligible offer is relevant to conversations held by reachable customers and whose acquisition economics can support the resulting spend.

Category permission, geographical access and account eligibility determine whether advertising is possible. They do not establish demand. Customer subscription tier alone also does not establish spending power or willingness to buy.

The commercial case depends on the value of an acquired customer, the likelihood of conversion and the evidence available to measure it. A long consideration period may make a conversational setting relevant, but does not guarantee effective advertising.

What can a ChatGPT advertising test establish?

A test can measure results for a particular offer, audience and period, provided the reporting and website measurement capture the intended outcome.

Impressions and clicks describe exposure and response. They do not establish incremental sales. A small number of purchases leaves greater uncertainty about acquisition cost, while a longer buying cycle can delay the result.

A useful interpretation separates observed results from explanations for them. Performance in one campaign cannot establish that the channel will work for every brand, or that a weak result is caused by the platform alone.
