How do brands appear in AI search answers?
Brands appear when the system selects information relevant to a question, which may include their own pages or material published elsewhere.
AI search is a rapidly evolving and highly complex area, with differences between platforms, information sources and measurement.
Google’s AI search features can use related searches to retrieve information and generate an answer with links. Eligibility depends on its search systems; a page’s existence does not guarantee inclusion. Google’s guidance on AI search
Visibility and accuracy are separate outcomes. A brand can be mentioned with an outdated price or an incorrect description. The commercial value also depends on whether the answer reaches a relevant person and contributes to their decision.
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO refers to efforts to improve visibility in generative AI answers. It overlaps with SEO, although platforms and measurement differ.
Google states that established SEO principles apply to its generative features. It does not require special AI markup, an llms.txt file or a separate writing style. That is guidance for Google Search, not a specification for every AI service. Google’s AI optimisation guide

What information can support AI search visibility?
Useful information answers relevant questions accurately and makes the business or product understandable in its actual context.
Product details, availability and evidence behind claims help distinguish one offer from another. Original research or direct experience can contribute information that is not already repeated across many pages.
Technical access also matters: content unavailable to the relevant retrieval system cannot serve the same role as accessible information. However, accessibility and clear writing do not establish that a system will select the page. Selection depends on the question and competing information.
How is visibility in AI search measured?
It is measured through available platform reporting and sampled answers, with each source covering a different part of the picture.
Google documents a generative AI performance report in Search Console. Separately, repeated checks of relevant questions can record mentions, descriptions and cited sources, but remain samples rather than a measure of every answer. Google’s measurement guidance
Referral visits, enquiries and sales answer further questions about commercial contribution. A mention count alone cannot establish those results. Market, language, date and the system tested affect how comparisons can be interpreted.
